What is classed as a learning disability?

A learning disability affects an individual’s ability to understand and process information. This can mean they are less able to complete daily tasks or communicate effectively.
Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability. However, no two individuals with a learning disability are the same, and our bespoke care packages reflect this.
Sometimes, a learning disability is accompanied by other complex needs, like mental health conditions or other physical disabilities.
Learning disabilities can also range from mild, where people can live independently, to severe, where people need ongoing support.
Whatever the severity of someone’s learning disability, Brighter Living provides support across the board.
What causes a learning disability?
Learning disabilities can be caused by a variety of factors including:
- Illness during pregnancy
- Problems during birth (e.g. a lack of oxygen to the baby)
- Specific genes being passed down from parents
- Early-childhood injury or illness (like meningitis)
I’m so happy with the fantastic service that has been provided for my son, all the carers at Brighter Living are so helpful.
